When should you apply hyaluronic acid, and can it make skin drier?

In short

There is a mechanistic explanation for how hyaluronic acid could leave skin drier, but it has not been measured directly on human skin. What the literature consistently says is that water drawn in will not stay unless you seal it with a layer on top.

Key points

  1. (1).

Moisturizing ingredients fall into three groups, those that draw water in, seal the surface, or fill gaps, and hyaluronic acid draws water in; it does not stop water from escaping (2023 review).

  2. (2).

This search found 0 studies directly testing whether it dries skin in dry air, and 0 studies is not proof that it never happens, so no conclusion is drawn either way.

  3. (3).

In a 2014 double-blind randomized study, water-rich formulas raised both stratum corneum hydration and permeability, meaning the barrier loosens briefly when water comes in.

  4. (4).

In a 2024 randomized trial (36 people), hydration after 4 weeks was highest with low molecular weight (56.4 vs 52.4 vs 49.0), but water loss and symptom scores did not differ among the three groups; participants were nursing-home residents aged 60–80 and the lotion was applied to the legs, so it cannot be applied directly to younger facial skin.

  5. (5).

Two related reviews were written by cosmetics company authors, so they were used only as supporting references; the core relies on industry-independent literature.

When to see a doctor

If flaking and stinging persist for 2–4 weeks even after changing the order and adding a sealing step, if redness or oozing appears, or if your whole body is dry and itchy enough to disturb sleep, see a dermatologist.

FAQ

Should I avoid it on low-humidity days?

The studies cited here make no such recommendation. On dry days, though, it is better not to skip the sealing step.

Is a higher concentration better?

The cited studies compared molecular size, not concentration, so no concentration figure is given here.

Should I stop if my face stings after applying it?

If stinging keeps happening, drop that step for a few days and watch. If it continues, the barrier condition matters more than the ingredient.

NEXT — JOURNALWhy does seborrheic dermatitis flare up every season change? Seborrheic dermatitis is described in the literature as a chronic condition that comes and goes, so the goal is to keep it down rather than make it disappear. The data linking it to seasons are hospital statistics from other countries and do not apply directly to Korea’s climate.
